Putnam County EMS offers a variety of training courses throughout the year. We are an Authorized Training Center through the National Association of Emergency Medical Technicians, as well as an International Trauma Life Support Training Center.

Basic Life Support (BLS)

The AHA’s BLS course trains participants to promptly recognize several life-threatening emergencies, give high-quality chest compressions, deliver appropriate ventilations, and provide early use of an AED. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

The AHA’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and prehospital settings.

  • High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
  • Important early use of an AED
  • Effective ventilation using a barrier device
  • Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

The AHA’s ACLS course builds on the foundation of lifesaving BLS skills, emphasizing the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR. Reflects science and education from the American Heart Association Guidelines Update for CPR and Emergency Cardiovascular Care (ECC).

  • For healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest or other cardiovascular emergencies and for personnel in emergency response
  • Basic life support skills, including effective chest compressions, use of a bag-mask device, and use of an AED
  • Recognition and early management of respiratory and cardiac arrest
  • Recognition and early management of peri-arrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia
  • Airway management
  • Related pharmacology
  • Management of ACS and stroke
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

PALS is geared towards healthcare providers who respond to emergencies in infants and children and for personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units. Upon successful completion of the course, students receive a course completion card, valid for two years.

Pediatric Education for Prehospital Professionals (PEPP)

PEPP represents a complete source of prehospital medical information for the emergency care of infants and children. Developed by the American Academy of Pediatrics, PEPP is an exciting curriculum designed to teach prehospital professionals how to better assess and manage ill or injured children.
PEPP is a comprehensive, innovative, and highly visual course featuring case-based lectures, live-action videos, hands-on skills stations, and small group scenarios.

The Basic Life Support (BLS) course is geared toward the Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) and the Advanced Life Support (ALS) course is geared toward the Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT) and Paramedic. The PEPP Course Coordinator should determine which course (BLS or ALS) is most appropriate for an individual. Any health professional who is responsible for the emergency care of children may find this course beneficial.

  • The hybrid course is a combination of online learning followed by hands-on practice in the classroom. After completing all of the online modules, students then attend an onsite course for hands-on practice.

Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS)

Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) remains the gold standard of education for emergency medical assessment and treatment. Endorsed by the National Association of EMS Physicians, AMLS emphasizes the use of the AMLS Assessment Pathway, a systematic tool for assessing and managing common medical conditions with urgent accuracy.

AMLS is appropriate for EMTs, paramedics, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurse anesthetists and physicians. AMLS is accredited by CAPCE and recognized by NREMT.

The course utilizes the AMLS textbook and course manual, and covers the following topics:

  • Respiratory disorders
  • Cardiovascular disorders
  • Shock
  • Sepsis
  • Neurological disorders
  • Endocrine/Metabolic disorders
  • Environmental emergencies
  • Infectious disease
  • Abdominal disorders
  • Toxicological emergencies
  • Exposure to hazardous materials

International Trauma Life Support (ITLS)

ITLS courses give the student the knowledge and hands-on skills to take better care of trauma patients. ITLS stresses rapid assessment, appropriate intervention, and identification of immediate life threats. The ITLS framework for rapid, appropriate, and effective trauma care is a global standard that works in any situation.

ITLS courses combine classroom learning, hands-on skills stations, and assessment stations that put learning to work in simulated trauma scenarios. Each ITLS course includes an evidence-based course manual with in-depth content written and edited by trauma care experts based on current research. ITLS courses are designed, managed, and delivered by course directors, coordinators and instructors experienced in EMS, pre-hospital care, and the ITLS approach.

ITLS is an approved provider by the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education (CAPCE) [formerly CECBEMS] and all ITLS courses are CAPCE-certified.

Lifesaving Skills for the Community with CPR and Stop The Bleed Courses

We also include courses for the General Public, primarily CPR and Stop The Bleed Training. We offer these courses regularly at our main training center in Winfield. If you are a large group and would like to have a training class scheduled at your facility, you may contact us.

Heartsaver CPR/AED/First Aid

$50.00

Heartsaver courses are designed for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for job, regulatory (for example, OSHA), or other requirements. These courses can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting. For many Heartsaver courses, students receive a course completion card that is valid for 2 years.
